The original Pre was released by US phone manufacturer Palm and was noted for its novel WebOS operating system. This introduced a number of software innovations to the world of smartphones and was lauded by community experts. After the release of their second Pre handset, Palm experienced financial difficulties and was acquired by US computer giant Hewlett Packard. Since this acquisition HP has been keen to capitalise on Palm's earlier phone successes by extending the line of Pre phones under their own name.
The HP Pre 3 is the result and it features an updated version of WebOS that has had a lot of input from HP expertise. The Pre 3 is powered by a 1.4GHz processor making it much speedier than earlier Pre devices and this also comes with 512MB RAM for a seamless operation. With a 3.6" capacitive screen the Pre 3 allows for multitouch input gestures and comes with a high colour depth of 16 million colours. An accelerometer is also present for auto-rotation of the interface.
The Pre 3 comes with some excellent connectivity options including HSPA and Wi-Fi, providing web access whenever it should be needed. There is also GPRS and EDGE available, along with microUSB and Bluetooth with A2DP for wireless headphones. The connectivity is put to good use with the Pre's HTML compatible web browser and it comes with Adobe Flash 10.1 support so that you can enjoy streaming online videos from the popular website.
The camera is one area of the Pre 3 that has seen a significant improvement from the earlier models. The 5 megapixel camera comes with an LED flash and software features like geo-tagging, and also supports 720p video recording. A secondary VGA camera is available for video calling.
The Pre 3 comes with threaded SMS as well as email support for most popular email servers and instant messaging support as well. With the HP Pre 3 you can also gain access to your social network profile to update your status or write on people's walls.
The Pre 3 provides a good degree of entertainment value, with the phone's media player coming with excellent support for most music and video codecs. Two versions of the Pre 3 are available with either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage space on offer for storing music and video content. Unfortunately there is no expandable microSD slot for extra memory, and this is perhaps one of the main drawbacks of the device. Having said this, 16GB should provide plenty of room for even the most avid music fans.
The Palm Pre was a highly popular device that was acclaimed for its WebOS operating system that introduced true multitasking and a novel interface to mobile phones. The Pre 3 follows on from this same award winning design and updates it with an improved camera and faster processor. For fans of the original Pre the HP Pre 3 is certainly a phone to consider, even if it is not produced by the original manufacturer Palm.
