The Xperia Play marks the first serious attempt at a smartphone dedicated to gaming. There have been other less successful attempts, such as 2003's Nokia N-Gage and games have been a feature of virtually all phones for as long as SMS messages. However, the switch to touchscreen phones has opened up a whole new world of gaming potential and allowed a lot of smaller games developers to publish their creations through various app stores. This has led to an explosion in the interest for mobile phone gaming which has been duly noted by console giants Microsoft and Sony, by the former with Xbox LIVE support on Windows Phone 7 smartphones and by the latter on this latest Xperia Play PlayStation phone.

What singles out the Play as the ideal gaming phone and superior to all other devices with gaming functionality is that this is the only phone to come with a dedicated control pad. This is the same style of control pad that you would find on the PSP or PlayStation and will be instantly familiar to anyone who has used either of those devices, and even comes with left and right trigger buttons neatly concealed behind the screen.

While the PSP gaming functionality can be controlled through this PSP control pad the phone also comes with touchscreen functionality allowing you to make use of standard touchscreen games from Android Market as well as use this as a more generic smartphone. With Android Gingerbread and Sony Ericsson Timescape the Play provides all of the same excellent smartphone features for messaging, internet and entertainment features that you would expect to find on any other Android phone.

This includes an excellent web browser with Adobe Flash support and support for YouTube videos, as well as fantastic social networking support for websites like Facebook and Twitter. Threaded SMS is supported as well as email and the Play also allows you to upload your own videos to YouTube. The Play comes with a 5 megapixel camera with WVGA support so that you can record these videos while out and about.

The Play features an excellent screen that is ideal for web content and of course fantastic for gaming. A speedy 1GHz processor and graphical acceleration allow the Play to handle the most intensive games on offer and with fantastic Wi-Fi and 3G connections you can enjoy many great online features including multiplayer gaming.

The Play comes with an excellent media player for entertainment that comes with good video and music playback support, and also comes with some great Sony music features like TrackID. As well as the scores of PSP games on offer for the Xperia Play you can keep yourself entertained with the thousands of games and apps from Android Market too.

For all serious lovers of games there can certainly be no better choice of phone than the Xperia Play from Sony Ericsson. It comes with all the fantastic touchscreen games you would expect to find on any Android or Apple phone and at the same time comes with some even better titles thanks to its PSP functionality. What really singles this phone out however is the PSP control pad which is a unique feature for this phone and one that really encapsulates what this phone is all about.
